The new Honda FCX Clarity is a Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV) that comes with a whole host of impressive features at a reasonable price.
Using hydrogen fuel cell technology, the FCX Clarity produces electricity in a very efficient manner using Honda's revolutionary new fuel cell stack.
Hydrogen fuel cell technology allows the Honda Clarity to run on hydrogen from domestic energy sources instead of gasoline, making it one of the cleanest cars on the road.
The new cars emit only water vapor, which as the cars gain in popularity promises to significantly reduce the level of greenhouse gasses that are released into the atmosphere.
These vehicles are currently still in short supply - only 200 fuel cell vehicles are expected to be leased over the next three years in Southern California - but more are planned for the future as new hydrogen refueling options are made available.
At more than 60 miles per gallon, the FCX clarity is designed to travel up to 240 miles before refueling, which occurs at a special hydrogen refueling station. As with gasoline, the fill-up is easy and takes only a few minutes to complete.
When it comes to performance, the Honda FCX Clarity is designed to be a blast to drive, thanks in part to its compact coaxial motor, which is quieter and runs at a higher rpm than a traditional gasoline engine.
In addition, it is also nearly 400 pounds lighter than a gas-powered car of comparable size, giving it a 120-percent better power to weight ratio. In addition, the Clarity is up to 20 percent more fuel efficient than previous generations of Honda fuel cell vehicles, and is 10 percent more energy efficient overall.
Honda's consistently high safety standards are also carried over into the design of the FCX Clarity, which comes standard with six airbags, a reinforced unit-body structure and a patented Collision Mitigation Braking System.
In addition, if a collision cannot be avoided, the car is programmed to automatically retract slack in the front seat belts while applying brake to lessen the force of the collision.
