Toyota's triumph as hybrids accelerate past the 3 million sales mark

Toyota - makers of the famous Prius - says sales of hybrid vehicles have now passed 3 million, saving the atmosphere from 18 million tons of carbon dioxide.

Hybrid dilute the environmental damage a car does by using an electric engine to supplement the power supplied by a traditional internal combustion engine and the Prius was the first mass-produced model.

The first hybrids went on sale in Japan in 1997 and the Prius moved quietly into the rest of the world in 2000.

Since then, there have been several generations of the Prius and Toyota has started to use the same technology in a range of other vehicles.

The first 2 million hybrids were on the road by August 2009 so the pace of change is growing.

Toyota says that these vehicles have emitted 18 million fewer tons of CO2 than their gasoline powered equivalents would have.
