US company Pratt & Whitney has announced that its engines will be used for up to 100 Airbus A320neo aircraft as part of an international deal.
The engine, which is designed to improve a plane's environmental performance, has been ordered by International Lease Finance Corporation (ILFC) in a deal which include 120 PurePower PW1100G engines for 60 aircraft and options for up to 80 engines for an additional 40 aircraft.
Deliveries are due to begin in 2016 and Henri Courpron, ILFC chief executive officer, confirmed that the engines' green credentials was a crucial factor.
He said: "We look forward to extending the benefits of this new engine technology, which will improve fuel efficiency and address other environmental advantages for our customers."
PurePower PW1100G engines deliver double-digit reductions in fuel burn, environmental emissions, engine noise and operating costs when compared with other engines. The engine achieves the reductions through an advanced gear system that allows the engine's fan to operate at a different speed than the low-pressure compressor and turbine.
