Extension Issued by EPA for Greenhouse Gas Reporting Deadline

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced today that it has extended the current deadline for reporting data from 2010, which is required under the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Reporting Program, from March 1, 2011 to September 30, 2011. Of particular importance, the GHG Reporting Program requires all entities that are required to submit data to register for the program at least 60 days prior to the deadline, which makes the new registration deadline August 1, 2011.

The current deadline extension follows a number of in depth conversations with industry leaders and experts, and will allow the EPA to conduct additional testing on the system that facilities will be required to use for reporting the data. It will also give the industry a chance to test the system, become familiar with the reporting tools and provide feedback to the EPA prior to the deadline.

To help with the reporting process, the EPA has set up nine rules that are necessary in order to comply with congressional direction for the GHG Reporting Program, along with the development of an efficient online public help center where industry participants can interact with experts and get answers to tough technical questions. In addition, the EPA has conducted a number of training sessions within the affected sectors and has held a multitude of meetings throughout the US.

The GHG Reporting Program was launched in October of 2009 and requires large emission sources from a wide range of industries, as well as companies that supply products that could emit GHGs if they were to accidentally combust or be released into the atmosphere, to report data annually.

The data collection procedures are designed to be an important tool that will help guide policy decisions and shape the direction of future programs that the EPA may decide to implement in an effort to reduce GHG emissions. In the long run, the program will also help the participating industries and corporations to operate more efficiently, thereby saving money while also reducing harmful emissions.
