Australia begins review into sustainable forestry
The Australian Government has stepped up its efforts to ensure the sustainability of the country's forest plantations.
Officials at The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) have commissioned a review of the codes governing plantation farming across the country.
Researchers from the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) have been asked to do the work, which will not only examine environmental concerns but explore ways in which timber exports can be increased.
DAFF's General Manager of Forestry, John Talbot, said: “This important review will give certainty to Australia's plantation industry, which is showing leadership in its implementation of sustainable practices.
“By working together, government and industry can further refine these already rigorous measures and ensure they keep pace with industry and market changes.
“The review builds on Australia's existing reputation as a responsible forestry producer, thereby strengthening the opportunities for Australian businesses to pursue new export markets.”
CSIRO is expected to report back by July 2011.
