Sustainable fashion is defined as clothing, shoes, and other fashion accessories that are produced in a way that reduces negative environmental impacts. Sustainable fashion is also known as eco-fashion or green fashion. Sustainable fashion has come to mean a lot of different things to different people over the past few years. To some people sustainable fashion is simply about buying less clothing, while others define it as only buying clothing made from sustainable materials. The truth is, sustainable fashion is really both of those things, plus so much more besides.
Most sustainable fashion brands use a combination of recycled materials, organic materials, and/or sustainable fibres in the production of their garments. Recycled materials are usually made from post-consumer waste such as water bottles or plastic bags which have been reprocessed into new fabric. Organic materials are grown without the use of harsh chemicals or pesticides and include everything from certified organic cotton to bamboo viscose. Sustainable fibres are plant-based fibres such as linen or hemp which require little water to grow and have a low environmental impact when compared to synthetic fibres such as polyester or nylon.
While there are many different types of sustainable materials used in eco-friendly clothing, the most important thing to remember is that sustainable fashion is not just about the materials used – it’s also about how those garments are produced. Sustainable fashion brands typically have ethical policies in place regarding worker’s rights, wages, and working conditions. Many sustainable brands also use low impact dying processes and employ Fair Trade practices. So when you’re looking for new clothes, remember to consider not just how they look but also how they were made – your clothes say a lot about you!
