In light of the recent horse meat scandal and the various health issues related to meat eating, the question arises, "Is it wrong to eat meat?" Leaving aside the, ethical, spiritual, sentimental and emotional reasons, there are scientific reasons, which when considered explains why millions of people worldwide eat a vegetarian diet.
After much recent study scientists have concluded that our early ancestors where vegetarian who ate no meat except in times of extreme crisis such as the last ice age, when their normal diet of fruit, nuts and vegetables where unavailable.
Scientists know that the diet of any animal corresponds to its physiological structure. Human physiology, bodily functions and digestive systems are completely different to that of carnivorous animals. Meat-eaters such as cats and dogs have a very short digestive system, only three times the length of their body.
This is because flesh decays very rapidly and the products of this decay will poison the bloodstream unless there is a rapid expulsion of this putrefactive bacteria. Meat-eaters also have ten times as much hydrochloric acid in their stomachs compared to non carnivorous animals to break down bone, fat and flesh.
Carnivores who hunt in the cool of night perspire through their tongues as opposed to non carnivores such as apes and humans, which gather food in the day and freely perspire through their skin to cool down. Another significant difference is the teeth and jaws of meat-eaters. Along with sharp claws meat-eaters possess powerful jaws and sharp elongated "canine" teeth to spear and tear flesh. They do not possess molars or ptyalin in their saliva which vegetarian animals need to grind down bulky foods. A cat can hardly chew at all.
Scientists have found that meat eating animals have an "almost unlimited capacity to handle saturated fats and cholesterol". Human digestive systems not designed to digest saturated fats, and they become diseased the more it is eaten. Human characteristics are in every way like the fruit eaters, very similar to the grass eaters, and very unlike the meat eaters.
The human digestive system, tooth and jaw structure, and bodily functions are completely different from those of carnivorous animals. Our tooth and jaw structure are those of a vegetarian; and our saliva is alkaline and contains ptyalin for pre-digestion of grains.Human beings clearly are not carnivores by physiology – our anatomy and digestive system show that we must have evolved for millions of years living on fruits, nuts, grains, and vegetables. Furthermore, it is obvious that our natural instincts are non-carnivorous. Most people have other people kill their meat for them and would be sickened if they had to kill animals for themselves.
Also instead of eating raw meat as all flesh eating animals do, humans boil, bake or fry it and disguise it sauces and spices so that it bears no resemblance to its raw state. If people could delight in pouncing upon a bird, tear it's still living limbs apart with their teeth, and suck the warm blood, one might conclude that nature provided them with meat-eating instinct .Scientists and naturalists, including the great Charles Darwin, state that early humans were fruit and vegetable eaters and that throughout history our human anatomy has not changed.
