2011 Glastonbury Festival to be 'greenest ever' with loo rolls for all

The 2011 Glastonbury Festival has long been associated with green issues, while the event itself can sometimes resemble an environmental disaster as hundreds of thousands of people take over the quiet Somerset fields - those revellers will be invited to help the festival become the greenest its ever been by leaving their loo rolls at home.

Festival toilets are infamous and, while toilet paper is provided, it's a fool-hardy music fan who doesn't make some provision for themselves before setting off to the festival site. But this year, toilet tissue makers Nouvelle are partnering with Britain's biggest festival to provide free loo rolls around the massive Worthy Farm site.

Hoping to become the 'Greenest Glastonbury ever', this year the festival plans to recycle 60 per cent of its waste more than 10 per cent up on last year when just short of half of the waste produced as recycled.

Cyclists are being encouraged with a special camping area and discounts at the food stalls.

Solar power will help shine the lights on stars like Beyonce, U2 and Coldplay.

Recycling on site will be based in a huge barn with 80 volunteers working through the weekend to separate bottles, cans and other packaging.

Michael Eavis said: "We're encouraging people to be as green as possible at this year's festival.

"We have put many new measures in to help us achieve this, not least by inviting Nouvelle on board as recycling partner to the festival, to give away free Nouvelle Soft recycled loo roll to festival goers.

Glastonbury regular Dave Jarman, 36, said: "For the past 10 years I've always taken at least two loo rolls with me just in case, but this year I can leave them at home and maybe pack another few pairs of socks instead of loo roll."
