Lemlem offers stunning handcrafted women's and children's clothing from Ethiopia.
Founded in 2007 by supermodel, actress and World Health Organization goodwill ambassador for maternal, newborn and child health Liya Kebede, Lemlem is a stunning handcrafted collection of women's and children's clothing that is made by traditional Ethiopian weavers from Kebede's homeland. Her efforts have helped to sustain the magnificent handiwork of the local people and have helped to create a new sense of economic independence among people in Ethiopia.
Literally meaning 'to flourish or bloom,' in the Ethiopian tongue of Amharic, the word 'Lemlem' has also come to be recognized as a reference for textiles that are handmade in Ethiopia from natural cotton. In fact, since ancient times Ethiopian people have worn brightly colored handspun cotton garments that are adorned with intricate embroidery. The Lemlem line of clothing preserves this ancient art form while providing new opportunities for the artisans.
To date, Lemlem has been featured in Marie Claire, Harper's Bazaar, InStyle, The Cut and T magazines and has a spread on Style.com.In addition to offering a full line of women's and children's apparel, Lemlem has added a line of bags, scarves and belts to its collection.
The clothing lines are full of casual yet elegant women's dresses, skirts, tunics and shirts, as well as a variety of children's clothing that ranges from items for infants to pieces that are created just for pre-teens.
The signature Lemlem style involves lots of blocks of bright colors, set against the sheer, breathable cotton that is characteristically woven in Ethiopia.
The line does an amazing job of marrying traditional weaving techniques and craftsmanship with modern style sensibilities.
Lemlem is currently sold at a variety of stores throughout the world, including the United States, Canada, Australia, China, Greece, Japan, Germany, France, Korea and the UK. To find specific locations or for more information please visit lelem. Image credit and courtesy of lelem.
