A new user-friendly electric vehicle (EV) charging station has been launched. The WattStation , with integrated WattStation Connect software from GE Energy means owners can set customer fee levels, monitor usage and manage stations even when off-site.

The WattStation, just launched at the Society of Automobile Engineers (SAE) 2012 World Congress in Detroit, features a modern pedestal design and includes retractable, self-washing flex.

Michael Mahan, who is product general manager, EV infrastructure for GE Energy's Industrial Solutions business, says, "Our EV charging solutions offer a variety of options that make sense for you and your community. Whether you need durability, modern style, freestanding units, software-enabled or simple charging functionality, GE has designed leading technology for the delivery, management, conversion and optimisation of electrical power and can connect you to the most effective, convenient solution."

The station comes is fully networked and comes with WattStation Connect software that has been developed in conjunction with car rental company, Hertz, which features electric vehicles in its fleet.

GE Energy's Industrial Solutions business is looking to reach agreement with transport navigation firms to include details about WattStation availability and pricing. The WattStation charging platform is suitable for installation at any retail, commercial or public building, including offices, shops, hospitals, car parks and more.

Yves Behar, one of the world's best-known designers, set out to combine function and modern-day design to create the WattStation. The pioneering EV station uses the latest technology to manage the impact that vehicles have on power grids.

Vehicle owners can use WiFi, 3G or Ethernet connections to communicate with the unit. Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology ensures secure access. Each station includes an LED light to show when it is free for use, charging or out of action. Its retractable, cord means it can be kept neat and tidy.

The modular WattStation can easily be upgraded, according to owners' needs.

The WattStation meets all safety and fire regulations and has ground fault production and NEMA 3R protection against precipitation. It also has ecomagination approval, which means it is able to significantly boost environmental and customer performance factors. American strategy and management consulting group, GreenOrder, assists in checking the approval process.
