Pratt & Whitney pleased with PurePower PW1524G engine tests

American company Pratt & Whitney says that it is pleased with initial ground testing on its new engine, which is designed to be more environmentally-friendly because it uses less fuel.
Experts subjected the PurePower PW1524G engine, which will power the Bombardier CSeries aircraft, to almost 200 hours of tests at the company’s West Palm Beach facility.
Bob Saia, vice president, Next Generation Product Family, said: ''The engine continues to exceed our expectations. We have already completed an unprecedented amount of testing on this first engine, including a full structural evaluation, performance, noise and emissions testing.''
The PurePower engine uses a gear system that allows the fan to operate at a different speed than the low-pressure compressor and turbine, which helps it produce double-digit improvements in fuel efficiency and environmental emissions as well as a 50 per cent reduction in noise.
The Cseries aicraft being produced by Canadian firm Bombardier is due to enter service in 2013.
